Wintertime is here which means chilly days and freezing nights. There’s no place like home, especially when having to go out on a cold winter’s day. Autumn is around the time when homes begin putting on their heaters and topping their beds with additional blankets.
Heating the home accounts for around 70% of household energy consumption, it’s important to try and reduce that figure. Not just to save money, but also to work towards becoming more eco-friendly. Relying on a heater too much at home can cause furnace breaks down which is something no one would have to deal with. Here are some simple ways to warm up your home this winter.
Use your curtains
Curtains aren’t just there to block out the sun, they’re also excellent for blocking out the cold too. You should allow your curtains to be open during the day as this is going to allow more free heat to seep into your house. Once nightfall hits, you should close your curtains.
Curtains can act as a layer of insulation to block the cold and to keep warmth in. Windows at times can have tiny leaks or gaps which causes cold air to get in. The same can be said for doors too. During the winter months, look into getting curtains on your door as well. Doorways tend to have gaps that bring in cold air.
Look into maximizing insulations
Roughly around 25% of heat is lost through the roof of our homes! It’s best to look into your walls and see if anything can be done about this. While it may be a bit pricey to install loft insulation, this could save you a lot of money in the long run. It’s also best to talk to your electric provider as they tend to have insulation programs to help their customers out. Sometimes this can be very cheap or even free installation.
Use a smart heater
Technology has massively advanced and central heating is a part of it. Smart homes have been gaining in popularity and the smart thermostat is now a part of it. Smart thermostats can help you save a lot of money potentially. Smart thermostats tend to have timers in their system. Programming your heating to turn off and on at certain times of the day can be cheaper in the long run. One mistake you’ll want to avoid at all costs is having the thermostat running all day. Thankfully, there are apps now that can easily turn the thermostat off and on.
Dress up
While it may not be a grand idea, sometimes it’s best to just bunch up in layers to combat the cold. This is a technique that a lot of people use to save money. In the winter months, just wear your warmest clothes indoors such as sweaters, sweatpants, socks, and everything else needed to stay warm. If you plan on working or lounging around the house, make sure to have a blanket with you to keep warm.
Move your couch
It may sound crazy but one of the smart ways to free up space in your warm and get warm would include moving your couch. Sometimes couches could be covering up the radiator or block warm air from traveling around the living room.
