If you’ve found yourself running out of space at home and are finding it hard to be comfortable in such a cramped space – it might cross your mind that it’s time to move. Your home is naturally going to become more and more full if you don’t keep a careful watch on things, but moving isn’t always the best solution. Unless you’re expecting to home another person, you don’t need to upgrade the size of your home, and there are a few great ways for you to make better use of the space you’ve already got.
No one wants to feel like they’re packed in amongst all of the things they own, nor is simply throwing it all out the right thing to do just because you’ve got too much stuff. The problem might just be that you’re not making great use of what you have.
Underused space
Often homes that start to get a bit cluttered seem this way because there’s a lot of space that’s not getting the proper amount of use. For example, if your garage is only storage for tools and things that you don’t really want in the house – that’s space you could make better use of. Of course, renovating the garage to be a more indoor environment can be expensive, but it’s much better than looking for a new place that’s bigger. It’s not just the garage that you should be looking at, but places like your attic and your basement that can make for great storage spaces, as well as living areas.
If you haven’t already made use of these spaces, it’s time you got to work on them – even if it’s not the coziest room in the house, it’s better than not being able to make use of it. Not only can it give you more room to breathe, but it will have your home feel like a completely new place.
Stop holding on to things you don’t want
Of course, as mentioned before the answer isn’t simply to throw everything out just because you’re starting to feel hemmed in. However, some have difficulty parting with things they don’t necessarily need or want, and hold onto them just because it’s been there a while. Learning to identify what you don’t really want, putting your foot down, and just saying no can help you to reclaim some of the space in your home.
If you’ve got a lot of stuff to get rid of, hiring a dumpster outside your house could be a good solution to this. Not only does it make it convenient to get rid of things, but it gives you a deadline and will have you being a lot more critical of your decisions. There’s nothing wrong with being happy with everything that you’ve bought for your home, but it’s important that you’re not just wasting space for no reason at all!
Use more of your wall space
It might not be the space overall that’s being taken up, but rather your floor space. It’s easy to take up a lot of the floor space in your home if you’re not making proper use of your walls. Putting up shelves, investing in more cupboards, or having racks in certain places can make it much easier for you to keep things off of your floors and countertops. In the kitchen, for example, having things like a pan and utensil rack can save you a lot of space across the whole room, and you’ll find that a lot of your kitchen space has been freed up – with such a simple solution!
Alternatively, cupboards can be replaced by shelves. You don’t need to have a huge cupboard taking up such a large amount of space in the room when you could solve it with a simple shelf. It’s out of the way, and all of your things can remain on display.
Getting creative
If you’re truly stuck with no idea how you’re going to create more room in your home, it could be time to start looking at making space where there isn’t any. Under your stairs can make for a great place for a bookcase or a shelf, or even a walk-in cupboard if you’ve got the room for it. This space is often underused, and you could clear up a lot of room in your home by making more use of spaces like that. Renovation is worth it if you’re perfectly happy with your current location.
