Author: Lis Wiehl with Sebastian Stuartt
The Newsmakers hit the spot with The Review Broads, so when I began The Candidate I was hot on the trail of Erica Sparks, San Francisco’s GNN investigative journalist superlative. The second novel in the series, The Candidate is well disposed with crime and adventure as Wiehl ramps up her heroine’s reputation and risk of death.
The Candidate follows the politics of Mike Ortiz, a war hero heading straight for the Oval Room of the White House in his run for president. He is married to a society powerhouse, Celeste Pierce Ortiz, known as the Princess on the Bay (Town and Country magazine); Celeste is a rich society girl who dabbles in philanthropy. She and Mike make the perfect pair, Celeste thinks, as she gets Botoxed in her plastic surgeon’s office.
Erica is based in New York City at GNN, where her nightly news show The Erica Sparks Effect has hit the top of the charts. But her creepy boss, Mort Silver, is never satisfied and keeps upping the ante – more and better numbers! So when Mort practically threatens her when her show slips for a few days, he throws Erica at the Presidential campaign – and Mike and Celeste Ortiz. And as Erika follows them, she realizes she is being wooed by Celeste Ortiz – but why? And why does she not feel comfortable with the perfect presidential candidate’s wife? And why is Mike so strange – a man who responds like a puppet with a charisma that does not match his past? So many questions – and Erika demands to know the answers.
As Erica swoops in and chases the truth by visiting the supposed Al-Queda prison where Mike spent nine months, she discovers odd truths and strange things start happening. And then the secrets come out and Erika is running for her life while discovering that Mike Ortiz is not whom he seems to be.
Throw in a little romance, a boyfriend for Erika, a suspicious war hero candidate, a little worry about her daughter Jenny, and a big news story and The Candidate rocks and rolls with drama and suspense!
