Cherie Calbom I known as The Juice Lady and is well known for her nutrition based books on how to stay healthy with food. In this book, she describes the hidden sugars in soups, bread, salad dressings; almost every prepackaged food has some kind of sugar in the ingredients. So even though we think of desserts, and ice cream and candy bars when we think sugar in food, this is not the case. As we walk into the grocer’s, we are bombarded with sugar infected foods!
In the first sections of the book, Calbom defines what sugar does to you and asks the question, “Is sugar really toxic?” Sugar unfortunately not only puts on the pounds but it makes us ill. It causes disease. Sugar claim experts is singularly harmful.
So what makes sugar so dangerous to our bodies? Journalist Gary Taub writes:
“Sugar and high fructose corn syrup are certainly not ‘acute toxins’ of the kind the FDA regulates and the effects of which can be studies over the course of days or months. The question is whether they are chronic toxins which means not toxic after one meal but after 1,100 meals. My premise is that sugar is toxic but it can take those 1,100 meals or years for some people to see the damage.”
Scientists know that consuming sugar for too long or in large quantities increases unhealthy cholesterol and triglycerides. It also affects the liver and produces toxins and uric acid in the waste. And this increases blood pressure and causes gout. It can set people up for kidney stones. And on and on.
Calbom goes on to discuss sugar addiction. This addiction also causes overweight and pre-diabetes. STOP says Calbom. And then she tells us what to do!
In a comprehensive style that she is famous for, Sugar Knockout not only lays out the problems but comprehensively gives the solutions, from lists of foods very high in sugar to recipes for smoothies and meals that are delicious without a plethora of sugar.
Written in a wonderfully readable manner, this compendium is worthy of The Juice Lady. It is another tome to keep in your kitchen by your blender and to read and use as we try to kick the addiction of sugar and the use of non-sugar sweeteners that are causing us to be sick.
