The Spider Adventure
Author: Cheryl Smith
When I was a little kid, every week I got a quarter allowance. And every week I handed that quarter to my Mom to buy me a Little Golden Book. Even then I was a bibliophile! And when I had grandchildren, I always found books to give them along with toys. I still love children’s’ books and I love that this series is about teaching young children lessons by the actions of the characters, the neighborhood children’s dogs!
The group is named “Oliver’s Heroes” and is led of course by the tiniest dog of all, Oliver. Oliver loves his friends and feels safe with them. His friends, says Oliver, are his heroes!
The dogs’ names are Oliver, of course, Buster, Mandy, Mr. Bean, Wiggles, Frenchy and Scraps and every day they gather under The Big Tree to find out what adventure they will pursue for the day.
This darling series is based on real dogs, and they even have their own website – OliversHeroes! Cheryl Smith, the author, has rescued all of the dogs in her series of story books, and the original Oliver was rescued by Cheryl (who is a lawyer during the day) when her courtroom deputy found Oliver scared and lost on the street. All seven of the dogs live happily with Cheryl as she creates stories about their adventures!
I loved this book! Wiggins sees a spider which scares his human little girl and tells the gang about it. Mandy worries that the spider is mean. Oliver thinks it might be mean … and angry! The spider looked strange with purple stripes and green polka dots. As Ms. Smith creates a tale of how different is sometimes just interesting, and that maybe even the spider is scared too, she allows parents to teach their kids about friendship, tolerance and how different is good too!
Darling beautifully illustrated children’s book …. I loved it and I am a big kid! Great way to teach your kids some great lessons and that reading is fun!
