Author: Mallory Ortberg
It is not often that I find myself laughing as I read a book: maybe I review too many crime novels! In any event, Texts from Jane Eyre had me chuckling and reading all night; this book is a literary aficionado’s dream! From Medea, Gilgamesh, Achilles, Dido, Plato, Circe, all the way to The Yellow Wallpaper, this compendium of witty and absolutely charming text messages from and to characters that we all know from history, great short stories, novels, plays, up to and including Nancy Drew, Atlas Shrugged and Fight Club had me laughing out loud and rereading over and over again.
Of course, this is the book of choice for your holiday literary folks, but don’t forget the little people too: college students, housewives, professors, welders, all of us: there is something for everyone here in these simply “right on” texts that tumble from Mallory Ortberg’s pen.
My favorites have to be Cormac McCarthy and The Hunger Games, as Ortberg sports with the best and brightest from the past as well as the future. Ortberg can be found at the cult favorite Web site The Toast, but don’t miss this famous character Texts from Jane Eyre as Ortberg saunters forth with some of the most hysterical, often passive aggressive feed bites from Scarlett O’Hara, Daisy Buchanan and a host of characters that create the most irreverent readings you will ever find!
