John Bemelmans Marciano is the grandson of Ludwig Bemelmans, the beloved creator of Madeline, the little orphan under the guidance of Miss Clavel and her 11 other little companions.  Marciano allows his grandfather’s genius to flow through this much awaited book.  John lends Madeline the air of the adventurous traveler – his previous Madeline books have presented Miss Clavel and her 12 charges in Rome and of course, France.  Now Madeline comes to the White House to the rescue of the loneliest little girl in the United States – Miss Penelope Randall, (nicknamed Candle) – the daughter of President Randall in the White House.
Like all little girls with flaming red curls, Candle wants attention, and fun.  But her important father is just too busy for her.  Along comes the French entourage and Candle and Madeline bond immediately – and the fun begins!
Why do we have such a special place in our hearts for this delightful little orphan Madeline?  Is it her nature, full of optimism and joy – her circumstances, wherein she always makes the best out of the worst?  I believe, through Bemelmans’ artistry and rhymes, that Madeline touches that little girl in all of us.
I read the Madeline books to my children when they were little – and I read them to my grandchildren.  Like Babar the Elephant, Madeline is a classic!  But not only for the size of the books – ginormous!  Not only for the delightful pictures – splendiferous!  Like Mary Poppins, Madeline lives in our collective consciousness as the orphan we all feel like at times, for Madeline transcends the loneliness of childhood and brings a smile to our hearts.  Like Eloise in New York City, she bounces above our heads with her 11 little comrades and Miss Clavel and enters into that realm that never goes away.  She’s a classic.  She’s our little BFF – Madeline!
