Baldacci delivers his criminal best in “Deliver Us From Evil”. Shaw, who works for an organization that takes down the evil guys and sends them to court, is tracking an ex-Nazi war criminal and psychopath named Evan Waller. Shaw runs into another group targeting the same monster as Waller is vacationing in Provence. Reggie, one of the field agents for a covert group that assasinates men like Waller meets Shaw while Shaw is pursuing the killer himself. Reggie finally comes clean after Shaw rescues her group from Waller’s ambush, and they join forces to capture Waller. Waller is too clever and the game begins.

This blockbuster novel pulls every trick in the book, twisting plot, romance and evil versus good into a tornado tunneling a diametric path of pure destruction. Reggie updates Shaw on Waller’s KGB past and Reggie and her people, along with Shaw, realize that if they don’t find Waller first, they are all dead.

In one of the most fast paced, violent and compelling novel of hunt and chase I have read, Baldacci’s intelligence and knolwedgeability crash through every page, every op, every detail. Although Baldacci writes crime novels, he reminds me strongly of Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons” and “The Da Vinci Code” with every line crossed and every i dotted. His exacting details. his compassionate although sometimes brutal characters who seek justice at any cost, and his writing give superlative reading.

One of the things I love about Baldacci’s novels are their 3 dimensional qualities. His women, like Hemingway’s Brent, are tough, intelligent and capable as well as beautiful and vulnerable. His main character, Shaw, is a complete character. Even though he kills in self defense, he also is fully human – brawn, guts, intelligence, and feelings all larger than life – but oh, so real. Mr. Baldacci not only creates compelling characters, he creates an aura, a reality that slips into our heads and hearts. One of the best crime writers of our generation, this novel is searing, almost too hot to handle. Loved it!
