We found the Best Apps for Entertainment

Summertime means big blockbusters and catching up on your favorite TV shows. But, what if there are no good movies in theaters and you’ve already binged everything in your TiVo? Well, there are a host of other options right at your fingertips.

Back in the day, our entertainment was limited to how many channels your reception could pick up. These days, it’s not how many channels you have that matters. It’s how many apps your iPad can carry.

Go on any online app store and you’ll find legions of programs offering endless movies, TV shows, music, even books. The list below narrows down only the best for your binge.

Amazon Kindle

Amazon Kindle brings all the great literary classics straight to your phone or tablet. Turn any book into a large print book with customizable fonts. Search within the text or highlight terms to browse on Wikipedia. Enjoy an immersive reading experience with Kindle’s built-in audiobook feature.

Shazam

If you’re familiar with the Jamie Foxx hosted show, “Beat Shazam,” then you know how the app works. True to its name, Shazam is the magic word that allows you to find any song that matches its acoustic fingerprint.

Pocket

The developers of Pocket know the thrill of surfing the net, and the trouble with staying connected to it.  Save any article, image, or video into a snippet you can access offline. If your browser is Firefox, then you’ve already got Pocket. Just look for the icon in you address bar (and always enable cookies).

Spotify

Spotify is a radio done your way. Browse through many custom made “stations” that feature your favorite artists and podcasts. Hit shuffle play to get random songs from each station. Sign up for a premium account and be able to pick and choose any track to listen to, download songs straight to your device, and remove those pesky ads.

Special Guest

While the internet’s made it easy to get entertainment at the click of a button, sometimes you need the real thing. Hire live entertainment with the unique Special Guest app for your next event. Each act is categorized by their talent, location, available dates, and hourly rates. Book not only musicians and singers, but also comedians, actors, and even circus acts!

HBO Go

Watch HBO anytime according to your schedule with HBO Go. HBO Go comes fully stocked with a rotating selection of hit movies and hot shows like Westworld and, everyone’s favorite, Game of Thrones. All you need is a monthly HBO subscription to run this app on your Android, iOS, Playstation, Xbox, and Roku devices.

Netflix

Netflix is an app that needs no introduction. Save time waiting for those red envelopes to reach your mailbox and start streaming off exclusive content straight from the source. Netflix hosts popular movies and original shows like Orange is the New Black, Narcos, Black Mirror, Arrested Development, Mystery Science Theater 3000, BoJack Horseman, and Stranger Things. Basic subscriptions cost $7.99 per month and $11.99 for premium.
