There’s a new stew in town
All Natural Saffron Road Food!
I fall into a feeding frenzy with all natural foods – so much so that I threw my microwave into the dumpster two years ago. I was eating frozen dinners every night like the stereotypical single person that I am and my weight was up to 165 pounds on a 5’8” frame! That’s a slapful of flabby thighs!
So when Z asked me to try out a new natural frozen food line, I hesitated. UNTIL – she told me the name of the line – Saffron Road Foods. I don’t get to Whole Foods as often as I like – (it’s called I’m poor) – but when I do I stock up on Amy’s. So I decided to try out Saffron Road Foods and – yum yum. Having lived in Europe until I was 17, I love ethnic foods – Turkish, Indian, Moroccan, and Thai. And, of course, American.
My first choice in the Saffron Road line was Thai Basil Chili Tofu with basmati rice. This dish is only one of their vegetarian dishes, and although I am NOT vegetarian all the time, I enjoy my tofu. “Tender chunks of tofu, mushroom, baby corn and red pepper simmered in a savory chili, garlic and basil sauce,” stated the box. AND along with microwave directions came BAKE IN THE OVEN directions (22 minutes at 375 degrees).
“Saffron Road knows that great food begins at the farm, so we source our ingredients from only the finest producers available. It’s no coincidence that we buy from small sustainably run farms and that we demand ingredients with no artificial flavors or preservatives. Our dairies and cheese makers have pledged to use milk only from cows not treated with rBST. Because the goal of Halal food is food that’s all natural and naturally delicious.”
Saffron Road lives up to its advertising. Each bite offered the fresh taste of natural foods – the sauce, spicy and alert, did not overwhelm the dish, but enhanced it. I love it when I can taste each ingredient and it lingers on my palette. The portion was just right, and like Golidlocks, I ate it all down! Also, this dish contained 330 calories, which fits right into my weight program. And I felt full, instead of wanting to raid the fridge for 2 more servings!
Saffron Road can be found at Whole Foods, Wegmens, Kroger, Shaws and other grocery stores. SRF carries vegetarian dishes like Manchurian Dumplings, macaroni and cheese, Thai basil chili tofu and three cheese lasagna.
And if you are in the mood for non-vegetarian meals, their choice of Indian foods include Lamb Saag, Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Biryami and Chicken Tikka Misala.
Look, I’m a picky eater. I shop three times a week and cook up fresh meals, three times a day, in order to look and feel healthy. Saffron Road Thai tofu tasted just as good as any dish I’ve had in the natural restaurants that proliferate in Salt Lake City. Even better, I am eating food that has caused no cruelty to animals, are 100% natural, gluten free, 100% vegetarian feed, certified Halal, non-GMO, from animals raised without added hormones, certified humane chicken, pasture raised lamb and NO ANTIBIOTICS.
Other entrees include Chicken Pad Thai, Lemongrass Chicken, and Moroccan Lamb Stew. Saffron Road also carries all natural vegetable and chicken broths (low sodium of course) and a new line of chicken tenders, and nuggets.
Beautiful and colorful on the plate, as tasty as fine dining, and at $5.99 and entrée, they are cost effective and healthy. You CAN taste the difference. I’m off to try the Lemongrass Basil Chicken! And I get to eat while watching 60 Minutes, (not putting on makeup and loading myself into that little black dress to go out in the snow to my favorite Moroccan Restaurant). Saffron Road Foods is my new restaurant in a box! What could be better than that??
