Oh what a web we weave! And this stunner of a novel weaves a tapestry from fragmented pieces that becomes a beautiful quilt to be hung in our consciousness. Fun, quirky, and oh so close to home we first hear from Dominga Saavedra (Sandy) in her web blog persona, Miss TragiComic Texas. Starting her career as a web blogger, using her blog as an emotional vent and a step to create a writing career, Sandy’s real job is that of a media web blogger also. When her company falls into a takeover by Nacho Papi, an entertainment snark blog, Sandy finds herself being made over. Her new boss, Angelica, is formidable and demands more and more nastiness for page views. Then she takes Sandy for a makeover, a total new look! As Sandy finds the stress of working on a “nasty” blog site wearing on her, she dumps her boyfriend Daniel and very publicly blogs some nastiness herself on her personal blog, Miss TragiComic Texas. She rags on her mother’s imperfections and says some things about her two best friends, Mary Jane and Veronica that destroy their relationships with one another.
Meanwhile, Sandy loses even more. She befriends her great-aunt Linda’s elderly boyfriend, Tio Jaime. Linda has died and asked that Sandy and her mother to drive out to her rather deserted ranch and pick up effects that they might want. She finds Tio Jaime next door, taking care of Linda’s house and starts confiding in him. She also finds Linda’s journal. On a parallel, Nacho Papi has asked Sandy to write a story on the chupacabra, a legendary beast who ravages goats. Since Tio Jaime is a goat herder, she asks him about the legend, then comes up with a brilliant idea – she will use Tio Jaime in her column on Nacho Papi, call him the Chupacabra, and let him give advice to people who write in. Her plan takes on a life of its own, and she becomes more and more careless about protecting Tio Jaime’s identity – and using material he would abhor.
Things keep going downhill. One of her co-workers quits for a newer and snakier blog, and writes an article co-authored by her ex-boyfriend Daniel – and Daniel outs her personal blog.
This novel, full of upsey downies and upsie goodies springs into step like silk through a needle. Each stitch brings Sandy more pain -and closer to herself. There is so much going on, you have to join the fun – it simply races and hits home with every nasty post – until Sandy finally learns her lessons, each one hard earned!
